1. Now let’s talk about the food. What can you tell me about eating habits in Belarus?

We live in a country where not many fruits can grow so they are not an essential part of our daily diet. We rely on vegetables more than any kind of food. Most of them are grown locally and that’s why they are relatively cheap especially potato. It is cooked in different ways all over the country. Draniki (pancakes made from grated potatoes ) are popular with foreign tourists. Historically, our ancestors were mostly farmers who had to work hard. None can work physically for long unless they eat enough meat or lard.

2.Do you personally follow the rules of a healthy way of life? Why (not)?

Though I understand their importance I sometimes break these rules. If I have a lot of homework to do I may eat something unhealthy such as a hot dog. When you are short of time your decisions are not always sensible. If I am not in a hurry, I try to eat only home made food. Eating out is fun, but you never know what cook they have.

3.What questions will you ask a British friend about their national cuisine?

What is a traditional breakfast in Great Britain? How often do you eat foreign food? What national dishes can you cook by yourself?

4.What national dishes can you recommend a tourist to taste in Belarus?

Draniki with sour cream will be my first choice as the main dish. Beetroot soup can be served as well. As for the drink I would offer a cup of sbiten which is a drink of water, honey and spices.

5.Scientists say that fast food is unhealthy but teenagers can’t stop eating it. What do you think about it?

To begin with I have no doubt that it is not good. Young people like everything spicy and salty. It is natural for them to please the eye and the stomach. Fast food is tasty thanks to numerous additions and artificial flavours. In addition to that it is relatively cheap. One more thing to remember having eaten fast food you don’t have to do the washing up. I suppose that teenagers need more information about the bad effect fast food has on us.

В рамках темы Let’s talk about Belarussian national cuisine могут предложить ответить и на такие вопросы как:

1. Do you like cooking? Why? Why not?

Why not? If I am allowed to cook something sweet I’ll be happy with it. As for me cooking is a true art. In the beginning you have some ingredients. If you do your best they will turn into something tasty and unusual. It is so pleasant to see happy faces of the members of your family when you invite them to the kitchen. If you mean that I have to peel 10 kilos of potatoes I hate cooking.

2. A lot of people refuse to have meals at school. What do you think about it?

Some say that kids refuse to eat in school canteens because of the fact that food there is of low quality. I don’t think so. In my opinion it is not fair. We have a good value for the money we pay. If we pay more we’ll have better food. If kids don’t go to their school canteen they go to the nearest shops and buy fizzy drinks and crisps. I don’t think that they are anyway better than the food they often complain about.

3. Imagine you are advertising your family’s Cookery Book. Tell us how to cook one of your favourite dishes.

My favourite dish is borscht which is a beet soup served hot or cold, usually with sour cream. To start with, you peel potatoes, beet roots, carrots. Then you chop everything and put them into boiling water in a special order. First go beet roots, then go potatoes and finally go carrots. They took different time to cook. At the end you add some flavourings.

What can you tell me about eating habits in your family?

All members of my family are ordinary people who have no special requirements when it comes to choosing what to eat. To some extent, we eat alike. In summer our menu is almost green — lots of vegetables and fruit. In winter we eat porridges and meat or fish. Of course some gender preferences do exist. Girls are in favour of something sweet and floury whereas boys are fond of spicy and meat based dishes.

Most of the families want to have a big kitchen in the flat but at the same time they have a meal less and less often. What do you think about it?

Most people are under constant pressure to meet yet another deadline. People in many professions work on end. Even at home they have some work to do for the following day. Some people are too ambitious to put an end to this bad habit. Others are overworked and underpaid by their employers. So having a meal is not an occasion on which people enjoy their meals and have a pleasant conversation. You simply have a bite and go on working.
