1. Let’s talk about shopping and money. What do you know about the history of money?

Nowadays we have banknotes and coins but the first form of money was something rare in this or that area. I mean pebbles of unusual form or skins of rare animals. Much later people started to use metals such as gold and silver as a form of money. Later precious stones like brilliants, rubies, sapphires were used as money as well. Relatively speaking paper money and e-money are recent inventions which are said to be not colourful papers but having some worth in gold. Some people doubt it and so do I.

2. Do you like shopping? Why? Why not?

Sometimes I like shopping and sometimes I don’t like it. It depends on what I am going to buy. If I am in possession of a great sum of money to obtain something trendy, I am most willing to obtain it. In situations like the one described I am really fond of shopping. If I have just a little money to purchase something trivial a loaf of bread for instance I will try to avoid doing it. It’s deadly boring especially when you have limited resources and you have to find something which is cheap but of relatively good quality.

3. What questions can you ask your friend about the best shopping places in his/her native town/city?

Is there a local market in your town? Where can I buy relatively good things at a moderate price? Are there any boutiques in your town?

4. What can you advise a person who wants to buy a birthday present for his/her friend?

To my mind, a birthday present isn’t only something valuable in terms of money but both useful and memorable for the person to whom it will be presented. A useful thing which won’t be put away immediately will always bring the memories about the celebration back making a person smile at the thought of the event. Choosing a present we should take into consideration likes and dislikes of the person who will get the gift. Maybe the present ought to have something to do with his hobby. Before giving a present you are expected to make a speech. Try to come up with the one that will highlight the best things about your present and the person who will get it.

5. Parents usually give pocket money to their children. How do you usually spend your pocket money?

My parents provide me with everything I need. So I spend the so called pocket money on books. I don’t like reading books on a computer screen and I prefer buying books to downloading them. To get  a good knowledge of something you don’t need loads of ebooks as all you need is two or thee books which are worth reading. Most books that came out 3-5 years ago are not as good as the few ones written decades ago.

Дополнительные вопросы к теме Let’s talk about shopping

1. What Belarusian cities are a shopper’s paradise? Is your native town among them?

Maybe the capital is good enough to be called a shopper’s paradise. I am not an expert on shopping but I think our shops lack in variety things on offer. Our goods are of high quality, though wrappings are not eye catching.

2. Advise me on how to buy a birthday present to my friend.

I firmly believe that the best present is the most wanted one. Of course, you should be reasonable in terms of its price. A true friend always knows what you have on your mind. If still in doubt, ask a relative or another friend. People sometimes slip their minds.
Меня смущает первый вопрос, на мой взгляд, вопросы для оценки способности говорить не должны быть конкретными. Умеющий говорить ребенок не всегда сможет рассказать об истории развития монетарной системы.

3. Is it easy to buy a good birthday present?

If you know the person well it shouldn’t be that difficult to find what he needs. All you have to do is to find the best thing on offer to please him. It ought to have something to do with his interests and inclinations. If you are still in doubts so you’d better stick to a fail safe option like a gift certificate. It goes without saying that you should have a basic understanding of his needs at the very least.

4. Are your parents happy about the way you spend your money? Why (not)?

An experienced man is highly unlikely to be pleased with the decision of a kid. Like many other children I make careless mistakes and waste my money. Sometimes I can’t resist a temptation to buy something eye-catching which may prove to be useless in the long run. My parents are surprisingly patient and let me learn from my own mistakes until I ask for help and advice. I am still mastering the art of using money economically. I am doing my best not to be in the red.
