1. Let’s talk about you hobbies. What do you like doing in your free time?

My hobby is painting. I have never attended any art school. I have no ambition to become an artist. As for me it is a way of relaxation. I just listen to my favourite music and draw some pictures. Some people have diaries to write, but I prefer images to words.

2. Do you find it useful to read books? Why (not)?

By reading books we learn a lot about the world around us. Reading is really useful, but you have to be sensible when you choose a book to read. We have so many books to choose from but not all of them are useful. Easy reading will not do good to anyone. It helps to relax, but it doesn’t teach you anything.

3. What questions can you ask a British friend about his/her free time?

What is your hobby? What do you do at the weekend? Do you often have parties with your friends?

4. Give me some advice on what to do in free time?

To my mind you should think about something that brings you pleasure. It’s good if your hobby is useful, but it’s not always possible. If you study hard at school, reading books will not help you to relax and get ready for new challenges. After a day of hard physical work you will not be fond of going to a gym either. Hobby may be useful but it shouldn’t be a reason for overdoing.

5. Many parents think that children should spend less time playing computer games, that they should play outside or do some sport instead. What do you think about that?

I think that they are right. Playing computer games can’t teach you anything useful. Most computer games are video games which simulate «reality», but the so called cyber-reality is not a reality at all. It gives a false idea that something can be achieved by sitting on a chair and clicking on a mouse.
На просторах интернета нашлись еще и такие вопросы к теме Let’s talk about leisure time:

1. Is cinema still important? Why (not)?

I am not keen on cinema. In my opinion cinema is a simplified version of books. It doesn’t develop your imagination. It offers ready made ideas which prevent most people from thinking. It is no more than fast food in comparison with reading. Attractive, but useless.

2. Can you recommend me to watch one of the films you have seen recently?

Вариант Give me some advice on what film to watch at the weekend.
Unfortunately, no. I suppose that best films are based on well-written books, but if you read the original books you will be disappointed. The plot of the original book is usually changed to make a film more successful. Some part of the story is often lost, but it never makes the film better. Comics can’t be a good reading, in my opinion.

3. Many parents complain that children don’t read books. Why do you think children are not interested in reading?

I don’t think it is fair. Kids read a lot, but they don’t read the books their parents used to read. Some of them read books which are known as easy reading. Others read on the Internet. I mean blogs, gossip sites and other things related to their favourite celebrities.

4. What is the most popular pastime with the people of Belarus?

Different people like different things to do, but in general, people prefer passive hobbies like watching TV or surfing the Net. Having a hard day at work won’t make you look for challenges. It is typical of everyone not only in Belarus, but all over the world.

5. Young people of your age complain that they are short of free time. Can you think of ways to economize some time for rest?

The best advice I can give is not to take up anything you don’t really need. Many people get involved in various activities which are not useful, surfing the Internet or watching films . It is not sensible to be engaged into something which doesn’t do you any good. The other possible option is to make a plan for the next day and try to stick to it.
