1. Let’s talk about customs and traditions of an English-speaking country. What can you tell me about your favourite holiday in Britain?

The holidays they celebrate can be broken down into 2 categories: bank holidays and public ones. Bank holidays are holidays when banks and many other businesses are closed. Public holidays are holidays which have been observed through custom and practice. For some people they are almost the same as they don’t have to go to work, but as I mentioned before the former ones lack in some kind of festive activity. My favourite holiday in Britain is New Year. It is known for a wide range of ways of its celebration. It’s a small wonder I like it since it is colorful and noisy. I wouldn’t say that their way of celebration of it differs greatly from the way of ours. Everyone likes having fun, don’t they?

2. Do you find some British customs and traditions special? Why (not)?

If you try hard you’ll find some strange and unusual traditions not only in Britain but in other countries as well. If you got used to something, everything which differs from your normal way can be defined as unusual but is it genuinely either strange or special? Some Europeans think that Maypole Dancing is a very strange thing to do, but it is common for many Slavonic peoples. Our world is becoming a global village, isn’t it?

3. What questions can you ask a British teenager about his/her birthday celebration?

What were your best and worst birthday celebrations?
What is your most memorable birthday present?
What do you do to have fun during your birthday celebrations?

4.What holiday celebration in Belarus will you recommend your British friend?

My suggestion will always be the same — Kupale Night. Its celebration is based on close contact with nature. It may resemble him druids rituals. All participants wander around forests seeking the fern blossom which is said to have magical powers. It should ring him a bell. Apart from that you sing songs and dance around a fire. Everyone is actively involved into this holiday celebration.

5.Do you think it is important to follow our grandparents’ traditions? Why?

I am in two minds about that. On the one hand, following traditions teaches us to think twice before leaping. At first you try to cope with a problem in a customary way. If it doesn’t work you try coming up with something original. I see this approach as an indirect result of following traditions. On the other hand, the world around us is rapidly changing and we have to adapt to it almost every day. The flexibility of mind is of crucial importance and you had better leave your options open. It is impossible to give a straightforward answer to this tricky question. It is good to know where you come from in terms of culture and history, but I wouldn’t lay too much importance on it.
