Продолжаем разбор Confusing words (CAE). Уровень учащихся: Advanced. Мельком взглянув на предлагаемые слова вы поймете, что это вам не ЦТ по английскому языку. Нет в ЦТ заявленных 5% заданий уровня сложности C1. Поэтому для успешной сдачи ЦТ подымаем уровень владения английским языком до B2.

Список изучаемых пар слов

В этой публикации мы забираем разницу в значении таких пары слов как: politics- policy, stairs ― steps, morals ― morale, amenities ― facilities, contemptuous ― contemptible. В предлагаемых упражнениях слова даны белым цветом и видны при выделении.

Разница между politics и policy

Теория:
The noun politics is used in two ways. It is usually used to refer to the methods by which people acquire, retain, and use power in a country or society. (Перевод — политика (политическая власть) )
If you want to refer to a course of action or plan that has been agreed upon by a government or political party, the word you use is policy. (Перевод — политика (принятая линия поведения) )
Практика:
1.Joe is very active in left-wing politics.
2.What is your party’s policy on immigration?
3.It was an unpopular policy and caused a number of conflicts within the party.
4.The group is campaigning to get more women into politics.
5.He is planning to retire from politics next year.
6.They believe that the European Community needs a common foreign and security policy.

Разница между steps и stairs

Теория:
A step is a raised flat surface which you put your feet on to move to a different level. (Перевод — ступенька)
A series of steps inside a building which you use to get from one floor to another is called stairs or a staircase. (Перевод — лестница в доме)
Практика:
1.One of the steps on the ladder is broken.
2.I had to climb a steep flight (= set) of stairs to her front door.
3.He stood at the foot (= bottom) of the stairs and called out, «Breakfast’s ready!»
4.We had to climb some steps to reach the front door.
5.I asked them to leave the parcel on the (front) step.
6.Take the back stairs.

Разница между moral и morale

Теория:
Morals are principles of behaviour. (Перевод — мораль как принципы поведения)
Your morale is the amount of confidence you have when you are in a difficult or dangerous situation. (Перевод — степень уверенности в себе)
Практика:
1.She’s a very moral woman.
2.Oh, stop being so moral!
3.There have been a lot of recent redundancies so morale is fairly low.
4.They hope to boost the morale of their troops.
5.Is TV responsible for weakening people’s moral fibre ?
6.A couple of victories would improve the team’s morale enormously.

Разница между amenities и facilities

Теория:
Amenities are things such as shopping centres or sports facilities that are provided for people’s convenience, enjoyment, or comfort. (удобства)
Facilities are buildings, pieces of equipment, or services that are provided for a particular purpose. (оборудование; средства)
Практика:
1.The hotel amenities include health clubs, conference facilities, and banqueting rooms.
2.Protesters have been demonstrating outside the new research facility.
3.The hotel is in the city centre, close to shops and local amenities.
4.The training facility is scheduled to open in April 2005.
5.The hotel offers exceptional sporting facilities, including a 50 metre swimming pool.
6.Nottingham is an ancient city with a Norman castle and an excellent variety of shops, theatre and other modern amenities.

Разница между contemptuous и contemptible

Теория:
If you are contemptuous of someone or something, you do not like or respect them at all. (Презрительный)
If you feel that someone or something is contemptible, you feel strong dislike and disrespect for them. (Заслуживающий презрения)
Практика:
1.He was very contemptuous of ‘popular’ writers, whom he described as having no talent.
2.It was an even more contemptible performance than Butler’s.
3.He’s openly contemptuous of all the major political parties..
4.Catherine was ready to explode. `I think you’re contemptible!’…
5.He was utterly contemptuous of her efforts.
6.They were portrayed as contemptible cowards.
