Confusing words (CAE) Part 6

Продолжаем публикацию материалов, посвященных употреблению слов (confusing words), которые могут быть спутаны изучающими английский язык ввиду сходства в написании или значении. Подборка слов предназначена для учащихся с уровнем CAE.

Список изучаемых пар слов

В этой публикации мы забираем разницу в значении таких пары слов как: backside ― back, classical — classic, economic ― economical, effective ― efficient, historical ― historic. В предлагаемых упражнениях слова даны белым цветом и видны при выделении.

Разница между backside и back.

Теория:
Your backside is the part of your body that you sit on.
Your back is the part of your body from your neck to your waist that is on the opposite side to your chest and stomach.
Практика:
1.I found my tennis racket at the back of the cupboard.
2.He was woken some time later by being kicked in the backside quite painfully.
3.Now we were both on our backsides in the mud.
4.We sat at the back of the bus.
5.Our seats were right at the back of the theatre.
6.Sitting there, day in, day out, hardly able to get off his backside.

Разница между classical и classic.

Теория:
A classic example of something has all the features or characteristics which you expect something of its kind to have.
Classical music is music written by composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. Classical is also used to refer to things connected with ancient Greek or Roman civilization.
Практика:
1.Another classic goal there from Corley!
2.He’s a classic example of a kid who’s clever but lazy.
3.The mature works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert belong to the Classical period.
4.Does she study classical ballet or modern ballet?
5.Truffles have been savoured as a delicacy since classical times.
6.Have you ever read Fielding’s classic novel ‘Tom Jones’?

Разница между economic и economical.

Теория:
Something that is economical does not require a lot of money to operate.
Economic means concerned with the organization of the money, industry, and trade of a country.
Практика:
1.The country has been in a very poor economic state ever since the decline of its two major industries.
2.The government’s economic policies have led us into the worst recession for years.
3.There’s increasing demand for cars which are more economical on fuel.
4.What’s the most economical way of heating this building?
5.Ministers are concerned by the low level of economic activity.
6.You should buy ordinary everyday foodstuffs in bulk — it’s more economical.

Разница между effective и efficient.

Теория:
Something that is effective produces the results that it is intended to produce.
A person, machine, or organization that is efficient does a job well and successfully, without wasting time or energy.
Практика:
1.It’s an extremely effective cure for a headache.
2.Bicycles are a cheap and efficient form of transport.
3.The lighting for the production made a very effective use of shadow.
4.Yoga is a very effective technique for combating stress.
5.The city’s transport system is one of the most efficient in Europe.
6.Modern-day engines are so much more efficient.

Разница между historical и historic.

Теория:
You use historic to say that something was important in history, or that it will be regarded as important in the future.
You use historical to say that someone or something really existed or happened in the past, rather than being invented by a writer.
Практика:
1.How many historic buildings are damaged by fire each year?
2.The coronation of a new king is, of course, a historic occasion.
3.It is a rather grey, colourless city, with few interesting sights or historical monuments.
4.The building resonates with historic significance.
5.Many important historical documents were destroyed when the library was bombed.
6.She specializes in historical novels set in eighteenth-century England.

Сегодняшний набор слов, а именно historic***historical, economic***economical, classical***classic, будут интересны и для готовящихся к ЦТ по английскому языку.
