English is the language of modern international communication (вопросы к теме)

На повестке дня: English is the language of modern international communication
Я не очень большой сторонник писать длинные ответы к вопросам. Структурированный ответ с приемлемой по уровня сложности лексикой может быть и не слишком длинным. Если послушать примерные ответы на вопросы из образцов экзамена CAE, то они не будут впечатлять своей длинной, а именно содержанием и идеями.

English is the language of modern international communication

1. Do you think English spelling rules should be changed?
2. Should the number of borrowings from the English language be limited in any way?
3. Do you think the idea of artificial languages like Esperanto has any future?
4. What is the second most important language after English?

1. Do you think English spelling rules should be changed?

As you know English is not a phonetic language. It means that we can’t write what we hear but follow the corresponding rules. The rules I am talking about are not easy to follow since they are based on distant events which took place in British history long ago. Doing away with the current spelling rules leads to not only simplifying the language which is beneficial to language learners but getting rid of some cultural heritage. I think it is the price we shouldn’t pay.

2. Should the number of borrowings from the English language be limited in any way?

I firmly believe that the process of borrowing words from one language into another one is a normal thing. The borrowed words may enrich the language as they are used to name the things for which there are no names in it. There are two different kinds of approach to the role of grammar in any language. According to the descriptive one the role of grammar is to describe any changes which take place in the language. So I think that any language should be described as it is otherwise artificially complicated rules will prevent it from being used as a convenient means of communication which is a primary goal of any language.

3. Do you think the idea of artificial languages like Esperanto has any future?

It would be good if there were a universal language, but it is impossible. Any language is not only a way of expressing one’s ideas, but a complex cultural phenomenon. There are many things which reflect a history of a nation in any language. Doing away with all peculiarities won’t do us any good as being alike means that we will be unable to come up with the ideas which are new to what we already now. Cultural and language diversity let us have a look at the same problem from a different point of view.

4. What is the second most important language after English?

It is out of the question that the most important language in the world is English as there are many people who use it as either their mother tongue or the second language. That’s why it is a small wonder that the second most important language in the world is Chinese since the population of the country is unbelievably huge.
