Is English a difficult subject?

As for a participant of different language competitions, English is not such a difficult subject. We all love English. All of us have been doing some extra class activities for a few years. Despite our enthusiasm we find some parts of learning a language unpleasant. Some pupils hate listening as they are bored with numerous exercises they have to do. Listening audiobooks is enjoyable, whereas exam format tasks make you work hard so as not to miss some numbers or facts. Even if you have a good ear for listening you will hardly like this demanding activity. Some pupils dislike grammar exercises as they are mostly based on exceptions to rules. While writing and speaking we follow common rules. You don’t have to know all the exceptions to express yourself. Those who are very good at grammar and listening often have difficulty in speaking. You may be asked various questions so there is little point in trying to memorise answers to them. Whatever our dislikes are, we love learning English.

1. What is difficult or boring for you to do in English?

The most boring thing for me to do is taking exams. At the end of each term pupils are asked to do tests and take exams. Many of them study hard to pass them. I think we should study to learn something new. Tests and exams teach us nothing. In my opinion they are useless. Good pupils do well whereas bad pupils do badly. Why should we go crazy about their results.

2. What have you already learned (or have learned to do ) in English during this school year?

Every year we learn lots of new words. The topics we study are often the same. We revise grammar patterns we studied before. We use new grammar patterns in speech and writing.

3. What is better: to be optimistic or pessimistic about learning a foreign language?

Whatever you do being optimistic is much better than being pessimistic. If you don’t believe that something is real you can’t do it. Pessimists readily give in. To be successful you had better get ready to try again if you fail to do something at the first go.

4. Do you know how your parents learned a foreign language?

I don’t know much about their way of studying foreign languages at school. My dad often says that they used to study hard and learn a lot. I think that they learnt a lot of words by heart and did many grammar exercises. My parents find it quite easy to help me with reading exercises. When it comes to speaking, they are not so confident. They would memorise topics when they were kids.
