Упр 1

The publicity an artist gets when they show a new series of works in the media is a double-edged sword,” Forrest points out. “You get attention, but you also come in for a lot of criticism from the media. First, they ask you to talk about your work and then they create their own interpretations, regardless of what you tell them your work actually says or means.” Forrest’s working style is to build up each sculpture piece by piece. He says that this process is not widely understood. “There’s no real vocabulary for discussing the craft of building the types of sculptures I create. Reviews of artwork which appear in magazines or newspapers tend to be based on whether the reviewer likes the particular artist or not, rather than discussing whether the artist is skilful, or how intelligent his work is.” There is still something mysterious about the creation of an amazing sculpture. “It’s very personal, very emotional. It’s like building a new friendship,” Forrest says. “Once a sculpture is finished, the process you went through to create it remains with you, like an old friend.

Упр 2

When I set out for work this morning, my car broke down, so I ended up taking the bus. As soon as I got on, I bumped into an old schoolmate, Mark, who told me he had set up his own business. He needed employees, so he offered to take me on, but I turned down his offer straight away. When I finally came to work, my boss told me off in front of everyone. She told me that I wouldn’t get away with it, that I’d let everybody down, and just went on and on. Eventually, I ran out of patience and said I was not going to put up with it anymore, and if she wanted to lay me off, she should go ahead. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I am working for Mark now.

Travelling by hot-air balloon may not be as fast as riding a bicycle, but it is certainly more stylish and more fun. Professional balloonists can charge up to £100 for an evening flight and a glass of champagne. There is never any shortage of customers for this exciting and romantic trip. The average balloon carries a pilot, a navigator and three or four passengers who stand in an underhanging basket. The balloon is lifted by means of propane heated air. The view from the balloon is breathtaking. However, those who are afraid of heights may find it difficult to get used to travelling at 3,000 feet! Certain rules of the air must be observed. Balloonists may not land on private property and should avoid landing on farmland in case they frighten the animals. Pigs and horses are known to panic. Sheep and cattle, on the other hand, seem unconcerned. Electricity pylons and telephone cables are also best avoided, for obvious reasons. Anyone who has travelled by hot-air balloon has greatly enjoyed the experience of following in the footsteps of the Montgolfier brothers.

Those customers are by far the most demanding we’ve ever had. They are thinking of terminating the contract with us, so I might have to leave for Boston at short notice to talk them out of it. I met John this afternoon by chance and he told me that they had appointed a new general manager at the Boston office and he is firing people at random. For better or worse, we’ll have to try and get along with this new boss. It seems that our investment is at risk. Apart from you, nobody else can fly to their headquarters. Initially, I was under the impression that they enjoyed working with us. I must have been mistaken. At any rate, we must do the best we can to rectify the situation. Yes, it’s getting out of hand. We are pressed for time. We can’t put up with it any longer.
